Inside the Ministry of Sound nightclub in London

Inside Ministry of Sound nightclub in London

If you’re one of the unfortunate ones who are unable to visit London and check out the raging nightlife scene, you’re in luck. The most famous club in all of the UK has blessed the airwaves with a free online radio station that you can find right in iTunes under the Electronica genre. There is good reason that Ministry of Sound (MOS) is ranked among the top clubs in the world and is one of the most recognized brands in the industry, and now you can get a little taste of it all while getting your fix of listening to awesome free music from great artists.

It all began in 1991 with the wealthy James Palumbo, along with several American industry magnets, as its driving engine. In fact, at the onset, the goal was to bring US house across the big pond. One of the men behind the plot stated that instead of doing what every other opening club does, they will focus their attention to detail to “100% sound system first, lights second, design third (in that order)”. Thank you! And it paid off, because I have yet to be in a place where the sound is unreal, the lights tantalizing, and the atmosphere one of a kind.

Here’s a video about the latest improvements to MOS in London that I found interesting:

In 2008, the extremely beloved Turnills closed for good, leaving The Gallery party in need of a good replacement home. It landed at MOS and has been a major success for both parties. So who stops by for guest appearances? Who does residencies? Only the best at MOS. It’s not uncommon to find Judge Jules, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Fedde le Grand, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

What’s great is that the radio station schedule is just as impressive with sessions from Markus Schulz, Mark Knight, Hed Kandi, Global Underground, and so much more to please your ears! If you can’t get to the club, this is the next best thing! Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Carl Cox spinning during a live broadcast on Ibiza Sonica

For all of us who can’t spend a holiday on the magical mediterranean party island of Ibiza, we hope to at least be able to tune into radio stations that send us the vibes directly to our home speakers. When an internet radio station is entitled Ibiza Sonica, you might start to get your hopes up for a Ibiza experience from home.

Depending on the time of day you tune in, you might start thinking that this station is more ideal for the hospitality industry for their background lounge music or it could actually even be utilized as elevator music. The first time I tuned in, I was nothing short of disappointed in the non-Ibiza-ness of the station. I mean, the description reads “Streaming live from Ibiza, 24/7”. I was expecting some serious beats and only received soothing music that made me yearn for more caffeine.

However, I came back to the station later on, and it warmed up. Still not what you might expect, given the island’s hectic reputation, but more lively. So I went to their website to see if this trend would continue, and sure enough, they broadcast some of the big nights out in Ibiza as well, for example, the opening party and Amnesia (one of the most popular clubs in the world). They also cover live broadcasts of DJs as big as Carl Cox and Timo Maas. Check out their cool website: Ibiza Sonica.

With every song, it seems to get more and more energetic and more representative of Ibiza sounds. I will continue to check in on this station in hopes to catch some great live broadcasts this season!

p.s. Some great news – I found you can also get a music download in mp3 of some of Ibiza Sonica’s DJ sets:

  1. Kevin Saunderson – Live @ Pioneer DJ Sounds Show (Ibiza Sonica) ̵..
  2. Dave Seaman – Sessions Best Of on Ibiza Sonica 25/06/2010 | Killing B..
  3. Jose Padilla – Bella Musica Ibiza Sonica – 2010-06-29 | Best Dj..
  4. Balearic Boudoir – Ibiza Sonica 2010-06-19 | dancex.org

Dogglounge Deep House Free Radio

I get a lot of play out of Dogglounge. There are no commercials or subscriptions (hooray!) – it’s just continuous free music: house music!

The selection of music is mostly pretty good. Most tracks have quite a groove.

Occasionally there are fantastic tracks that have me turning up the sound, and the music sends some pretty pleasant sensations through my body. On the flipside, every so often it lapses into grooveless robo-music, and I find myself switching to other music. On balance, the track selection is above average.

Dogglounge isn’t always house; there’s quite a few ambient pieces mixed in. I even heard a breakbeat track in there.

While Dogglounge is very smooth, and can be listen to at background volume levels, it actually improves with a bit of volume.

Dogglounge is great for listening to while getting things done. It’s vibe is “up” and “active”, without being over-the-top (e.g. drum & bass).

If you listen a fair bit for a week, you’ll hear the playlist repeat. Still, if you get far enough to hear tracks repeat, you’ve probably been pretty well rewarded listening-wise.

You can find Dogglounge Deep House Radio under the Electronica section in iTunes – it’s some of the better free music online. Enjoy!
