Online Radio Station Cygnus BannerCygnus Radio calls themselves the signature station of independent radio. Browsing their impressive program list and hearing the excellent show Daves Blues Corner, I was thoroughly impressed. This is online radio of the highest order catering for all musical appetites. Eclectic programing includes the genres blues, southern rock, world, metal, progressive rock, electronic, and a taste of every style imaginable with no nationality excluded.

I am confident that I have found the most exciting online radio station we have found yet. There is a class to the station that is evident by the lack of intrusion to the flow of music and has me excited about hearing the other shows. Presenters such as Malice Cooper and his Nightmares with Malice Cooper shock rock program and SwanSpirit presents Goddess Radio which showcases women in music from all genres around the world.

On their website there is a chatroom and forums that create a sense of community for real music lovers in search of great music without the hype and bull fed to us by labels and advertisers. You can also view the extensive playlists so you can go download free music of the great tracks they played during the show you listened to. Yes it looks as the bar for online radio has been set very high – after listening to other pretty poor only radio I have found a really satisfying station.

Congratulations to the producers of Cygnus Radio – a truly great online radio station.

KCRW On Air Free Online Radio

KCRW is a great public radio station from Los Angeles broadcasting online.

They are certainly eclectic – I won’t even try to to describe the music they play, because they’re not fixed on a musical genre. You might hear a soft and pop-py song with some cute & kooky female vocals, some edgy electronica, a bit of grungy-ish rock, then a beautiful Led Zeppelin meets Debussy instrumental number on a nylon guitar.

What KCRW’s DJs do have is taste – they pick good music…that sticks in your head until you go online and download music that you heard. This is not an easy listening station – I find I can’t just have it on in the background – too much of the music is good and commands attention.

What do I mean by “good”? The music on KCRW tends to have one or more of these qualities:

  1. Artistic – there’s something beautiful about the music – it isn’t just your standard overproduced schlock
  2. Avant Guarde – music that’s trying something new.
  3. Quirky – the music different or curious in some way.
  4. Beautiful – sometimes the music is just flat out beautiful.

It’s a great break from commercial music.

Will you enjoy KCRW? Try them. If you don’t like it, try them again later. And perhaps once more. Don’t judge them solely by first listen. If you love music, you will find some music you love. And sometimes you’ll get gold.

KCRW plays lots of new music, and often has bands in playing live. With L.A. being the center of the music industry, KCRW gets some talented bands in their studio.

You can find KCRW under Radio in iTunes under the Eclectic section. You have two free radio stations to pick from:

  1. KCRW ON AIR – their live-to-air stream, which also has programming from the BBC, PRI & NPR (National Public Radio).
  2. KCRW ECLECTIC24 – their 24 hour music mix – recommended.
